William Porter: The leader behind Porter & Company Builders

William Porter is the founder of Porter & Company Builders and a licensed general contractor with over 15 years of experience and deep roots in Greensboro. His curiosity about how things work has shaped everything he does. From an early age, he was captivated by the physical world — eager to understand how structures, systems, and the mechanics of everyday life function.

Following the 2008 financial crisis, William channeled that drive into service, joining AmeriCorps VISTA with Indian River Habitat for Humanity. There, he led volunteer crews in carefully deconstructing homes & buildings to recover and repurpose building materials through the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. His commitment to that work earned him the Lifetime Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2010.

That hands-on foundation grew into a broader understanding of how communities are built. William went on to earn a GIS bachelors degree from UNC Greensboro, then brought that planning-minded perspective into municipal work with the City of Greensboro before moving into luxury home development, sharpening his eye for detail on some of the region's most demanding residential projects. That path — service, planning, and high-end construction — laid the groundwork for founding Porter & Company Builders.

Off the job site, William is an avid mountain biker and outdoor enthusiast who believes environmental stewardship isn't just a philosophy — it's a practice woven into everyday life. That conviction sits alongside a lifelong love of everything motorized and mechanical. It's in the space between those two passions that William found his purpose: building with performance and precision, guided by a genuine respect for building science.
